I have a hard time getting excited about the fall season, only because I can’t escape the sinking feeling that winter is fast-approaching. For me, autumn is the calm before the storm; it’s so serenely perfect that instead of appreciating the here and now, I’m dreading the future and lamenting the hours of sunlight getting shorter. But there are two upsides to the season:
1. Fall Clothes!
I dress like it’s fall year-round anyway, so one can imagine how great it feels to tug on a pair of jeans in 60 degree weather versus 80 degrees. Layering clothing is my specialty, and boots are my favorite type of shoe. Plus, hello, leather jacket season? Although springtime is preferable, I’ll take this hoodie and scarf weather over tank tops and pea coats any day.
2. School-Time Nostalgia
All of the senses that autumn invokes – the dark evenings, crisp air, the feeling that we’re 3/4 of the way through the calendar year – never fail to remind me of childhood. Fall always has me picturing my sister and I, camped out in front of the TV after elementary school, watching the quintessential PBS lineup of Arthur, Wishbone, ZOOM and Bill Nye the Science Guy.
There is something special about this time of year. Even after school is over and done with, September still gives one the feeling that anything is possible, offering the renewed energy that comes from a fresh start and a clean slate.
