I try and practice graciousness most every day; especially on mornings when it’s tough to get out of bed and evenings when my teeth are grinding and energy is low. But November, of course, is the perfect time of year to reflect on everything that is positive and share the good vibes with others. What am I most thankful for this year?
1. My family – It’s become so clear over the last few years just how incredibly lucky I am to be a part of a family that is so close, and who genuinely enjoys each others’ company. After all, how many people get to say that their sibling is their best friend? Or that they stay in touch with their parents via Skype and silly selfies? My family is my rock, and it is such a blessing having such a hilarious, brilliant, and admirable support group to always rely on.
2. Church – I finally bit the bullet and started attending church. After growing up in a conservative Presbyterian congregation, I was more than happy to take a break from organized religion in college. But as a deeply spiritual person, I determined to find a more relaxed environment this year; and was so fortunate to find such a place at Freedom Church. I never would have imagined I would look forward to waking up on the weekends to go (or wish I wasn’t working on Sundays SO I could go), but am so insanely thankful I found this organization where praise hands, whoops and “amen”s are encouraged, where the Bible is read to a non-denominational and diverse group of listeners, and where music is the center of prayer.
3. Security – It’s a huge relief to have a full-time, salaried position with benefits, and it’s a gift I don’t often take for granted. I know how hard it is for friends and acquaintances to find decent-paying jobs at present, and to be in a position that offers me flexibility, a fun atmosphere, and creative license still astounds me. Hey, if you anyone out there is looking for a job, I highly suggest the agency life.
4. Inspiring contemporaries – It’s so important to me that I surround myself with people who are positive influences, and this year I’ve been surrounding by incredibly smart, passionate and caring people I am truly glad to know. From the Broke Girls to Philly PR Girls to family and colleagues, I know so many people who are inspiring in so many ways! For that, I count myself truly lucky.
5. Entertainment – From plays and musicals to books, television and music, I would be absolutely lost without the artistic mediums I surround myself with on a daily basis. These characters, stories, songs and melodies keep me sane; keep me laughing and engaged creatively. I can’t even imagine a world without any of these, and I am super grateful to the creative minds who engineer the media I enjoy everyday – especially those who do so with a progressive agenda.
